Health Insurance for International Students

If you are an international student attending school in the U.S., you will have excellent health care available to you. There are many options available that come at varying costs. In order for you to get the care that best benefits you, it will be important for you to understand a few basic things about U.S. health care.

Most importantly, you should be aware that paying for health care is the responsibilities of individuals in the U.S., not the government. Because the need for health care can occur suddenly and can cost a lot of money, most Americans purchase health care insurance for themselves and their families. Your college or university will likely require you, as an international student, to show proof that you have health insurance or to purchase a student health insurance policy offered by the school.

There are many different kinds of health insurance policies in the U.S. that dictate how much coverage you have and even where you can receive health care. So, it is important to fully understand the insurance policy prior to purchasing it. It is recommended that you ask your international student advisor to assist you in this process and contact the insurance company for any questions you have as well. You should be aware that just paying for the policy will not be the entirety of your expenses. Most policies have what is called a “deductible” or “co-pay” which is an amount you must pay before your insurance covers the rest. For example, if your plan pays 100% after deductible that means you may have to pay an amount of $50 before your insurance company pays the remaining $200 balance of a doctor bill. Health care in the U.S. is very good but also very expensive. It is important for you to ask as many questions as you need to in order to fully understand your health care and its costs.

The best place for you to receive health services is probably going to be the Student Health Center on your college or university campus. These health care professionals are aware of what international students may need and provide confidential care for all students. They are also available to refer you to specialized care should you need it. Much of the time, students can receive care at these facilities for a greatly reduced or even no cost because they are financially supported by your tuition and fees. If there is no Student Health Center on your campus, ask your international student advisor to recommend a doctor or clinic and check to make sure that provider is covered under your insurance policy. You should not go to a hospital emergency room for health care except in a true medical emergency as these locations are typically the most expensive place to receive medical attention.
