The incidence of skin cancer is rising. The likelihood of skin cancer is increased with frequent or long-term exposure to the sun. Fair-skinned individuals are even more susceptible. In addition to limiting sun exposure, be sure to cover up with clothing and use sunscreens with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher.

The most deadly form of skin cancer is malignant melanoma. It can be identified by certain types of pigmented spots. Asymmetry in which one-half of the pigmented spot does not match the other half. Border irregularity. Color varies from one area to another. Diameter is larger than a pencil eraser.

To decrease the likelihood of developing skin cancer, wear a sunscreen with SPF of at least 15, and do the following: Apply the sunscreen liberally over all exposed skin surfaces. Put it on at least 20 or 30 minutes before going outdoors. Even if you are wearing one of the waterproof varieties, you should reapply frequently as it wears off.
