5 Surprising Health Benefits of Yoga

April 19, 2012

There was a great interview on NPR’s “Fresh Air” recently about the surprising health benefits of yoga. Western science/medicine is learning more about the health benefits of this ancient spiritual practice. Yoga is not just about flexibility and meditation, it can also lower your blood pressure, improve cardiovascular function and lower the risk of various diseases.

Eli Broad, a science writer for the New York Times, has written a new book called The Science of Yoga, which explores the history, risks and rewards of yoga. There is much more to yoga than most people might expect.

Coffee: is it good or bad for your health?

February 24, 2012

People all over the world drink over 2.25 billion cups of coffee each day. Coffee is one of the world’s most popular beverages and one of the world’s most-traded commodities. Over 150 million Americans drink coffee each day, consuming over 22 gallons of coffee per year, per person. People love coffee for the caffeine, the flavor, the stimulating effects, the ability of the drink to focus the mind and sharpen the intellect. But what is all this coffee actually doing to our health? Is coffee “good for you” or “bad for you?” How can we find out?
There have been many studies conducted about the health effects of coffee, but these studies often have unclear or contradictory results. Some studies show that coffee benefits our health or reduces the risk of certain diseases, while other studies show that coffee has health risks as well.
Here are a few of the overall benefits (and possible risks) that science seems to have discovered in coffee (Source: Wikipedia).

What can Six Drinks teach us about health and wellness?

February 22, 2012

One of the most surprisingly entertaining and informative books I’ve read during the past few years was “A History of the World in Six Glasses,” by Tom Standage. This book is a history of six of humanity’s most popular drinks: beer, wine, liquor, coffee, tea and Coca-Cola. It discusses how each of these drinks were discovered/invented and how they came to be widely consumed.

There are interesting stories about the history and health effects of each drink, as well as the broader social trends that made each drink popular at each point in time. There’s a lot we can learn about human health and wellness by taking a closer look at these Six Glasses.

Health lessons from Michael Pollan’s “In Defense of Food”

January 20, 2012

A few years ago I read a really great book that helped change my perspective on food. It’s called “In Defense of Food,” by Michael Pollan, and it takes a new look at the fundamental assumptions that many Americans make (without even realizing it) about our diets.

According to Pollan’s book, many Americans are suffering from health problems (ranging from high blood pressure to diabetes to heart disease, cancer and stroke) that are caused or made worse by the “Western diet” – full of fat, meat, salt, sugar and processed foods.

After watching this interview, you might want to think twice about whether your family is protected or not.

We recently had the opportunity to speak with funeral director of IRA Kaufman, David Techner. As it turns out, his experience is far-more rooted in the lives and families of the deceased than the actual deceased.

Check out the video interview below. After watching, you’ll probably want to consider acquiring changes to your life insurance (or getting it if you have no life insurance at all). If that’s the case, reach out to us at MyInsuranceExpert.com – we’ll take care of all your life insurance needs!

Want to find low-cost life insurance? Stop smoking.

December 19, 2011

One of the most important health questions that people get asked when they apply for life insurance is, “Have you used a tobacco product in the last 12 months?” If you answer “Yes,” that means that in the eyes of your life insurance company, you qualify as a smoker, and that means that your life insurance company is going to expect you to pay a higher life insurance premium than you would have to pay if you were a non-smoker.

Why are there so many health questions when I apply for life insurance?

November 29, 2011

Part of getting life insurance involves filling out a questionnaire about your health history and physical condition. Some people might be worried about this process, or unsure of why we ask so many health questions when applying for life insurance. Why do life insurance companies need to know so much about your health? Isn’t this kind of invasive or creepy or “wrong” somehow?

Like so many questions in life, there is a short answer and a long answer.

The short answer is: Life insurance companies need to know how healthy you are so they can decide what kind of life insurance policy to offer you.

Do you need a physical to get life insurance?

November 22, 2011

Many people think you need to get a full physical exam as part of getting approved to buy life insurance. But the truth is, you don’t. Some life insurance products don’t require a physical, and for the ones that do require a medical check, we can take care of it much faster and easier than a full-fledged physical at your doctor’s office.
