Important Health Insurance Terms: UCR Charges

October 1, 2009

UCR Charges: UCR stands for usual, customary and reasonable. UCR may be called allowable charges by your health plan. Basically, health plans will consider benefits for charges that are usual, customary and reasonable. In other words, the provider’s usual fee should not be more than what is customary in the provider’s area and is reasonable for the service rendered. In those plans which have a network of providers, the providers contractually agree to accept payment of the UCR fee and will write off any amount over this fee.

Tri-Committee Health Reform

July 1, 2009

Just a day or two ago, three separate committees from the house (Ways and Means Committee, Energy and Commerce Committee, and Education and Labor Committee) finally released one collaborative proposal addressing the objectives of President Obama’s health care reform. From a basic overview, this proposal intends to:

  • Provide affordable health coverage for all
  • Protect one’s choice of coverage; i.e., health plan and doctors
  • Increase/promote preventive care services
  • Create a national health Exchange

From a deeper glance, the Tri-Committee proposal truly does intend to overhaul today’s current health insurance exchange/market. Not only will there be adjustments to the qualifying factors of today’s current health care options, but there is serious discussion about introducing a public health insurance option.
