The loss of a loved one results in a mixture of grief and longing: grief for not having that person to talk and share with, and longing to have just one more opportunity to let him or her know how much we cared. Added to these emotions is the realization that the survivors are tasked with putting some affairs in order for the deceased. This could involve closing accounts, paying off balances, selling off or distributing the assets, and sorting through all of the other paperwork that accumulates in a lifetime. What’s more, for those who relied on the income of the deceased, it involves the uncertainty that they’ll be able to continue their existing lifestyle (stay in the family home, pay for child care, send children to college, retire, etc.).
