Do you need a physical to get life insurance?

November 22, 2011

Many people think you need to get a full physical exam as part of getting approved to buy life insurance. But the truth is, you don’t. Some life insurance products don’t require a physical, and for the ones that do require a medical check, we can take care of it much faster and easier than a full-fledged physical at your doctor’s office.

When you apply for life insurance with MyInsuranceExpert.com, we have you go through a brief medical exam – we call it a “Paramed.” Check out this video of Becky from MyInsuranceExpert.com discussing Parameds and what you can expect. Basically a Paramed is a short, simple medical exam where we have a nurse come to your house and check your weight, height, and blood pressure, and collect a small blood sample to check your cholesterol and other blood levels.

The Paramed exam is simple and comfortable, and it’s fast: it often only takes 30 minutes or less.

Why do we do Paramed exams when people want to buy life insurance?

• We need to know your body mass index. Having a health body mass index (BMI) is an indicator for your overall physical health. If you weigh an appropriate amount relative to your height, that means you are a lower risk to insure and you qualify for better prices on your life insurance premium. Getting a Paramed exam ensures that you qualify for the most affordable life insurance policy possible.
• We need to know your bloodwork. Cholesterol levels, lipids and triglyceride levels can all be indicators of good health, or signs of possible health risks. Depending on where your numbers are, that might affect your overall risk level – and affect your insurance premiums. If your bloodwork levels are abnormal – i.e. high cholesterol, or too much “bad” cholesterol and not enough “good” cholesterol, that might be a sign that you need to make some healthy lifestyle or dietary changes. Or it might be a sign that you need medication or other health care to avoid possible health problems in the future.

Do you need to worry about getting a Paramed exam?
No. It’s safe, efficient and friendly. The nurses who perform the exams are health care professionals who are highly experienced in doing these types of exams. Yes, there’s a quick stick of a needle, but it’s over before you know it and you can get on with your day. These exams are faster, easier and less trouble than a typical doctor’s office visit.

After we get the results, we use them to decide what level of life insurance premium you qualify for – if your physical health is good and your bloodwork is normal, chances are you will qualify for a “select” life insurance policy with some of the most affordable life insurance rates.

If the Paramed exam identifies any health issues, it often does not affect your ability to get life insurance. Even if the premiums that you qualify are not as low as a “select” option, there are many options to get life insurance even if you have high cholesterol or other minor health concerns.

Getting a Paramed exam as part of applying for life insurance might even make a positive difference in your health. It might alert you to some health issues that you didn’t know you had, or it might even motivate you to make some changes in your diet, exercise more, and take better care of your health.
