Should I buy the lowest price life insurance?

November 10, 2011
One of the first questions people ask about buying life insurance is, “How can I find the most affordable life insurance?” We know it can be hard to commit to spending money on life insurance, along with everything else in your monthly budget, and you want to get good value for your money. But the truth is, the most affordable life insurance is not always the best.
Sometimes if you want to find the best life insurance policy, you need to consider a full range of factors that influence the decision. It’s understandable to be cost-conscious, but you don’t want to skimp on life insurance, since it protects your family when they need it most.
Life insurance is a complicated financial product, and so there are many factors that go into a life insurance policy that affect the price of the life insurance, such as:
(CLICK BLOG POST TITLE TO READ FULL POST)
  • Length of term: If you want to buy the best type of term life insurance, it depends on how long you want the life insurance to last. For example, a 20-year term life insurance policy will cost less than a 30-year term life insurance policy – but if you’re 25 years old when you buy that 20-year term life policy, you will have no life insurance when you’re 45 years old – and chances are it will be more difficult and more expensive to buy life insurance when you’re 45 than it was when you were younger. Think carefully about how long you need to protect your family – and remember the various life stages that your family will go through along the way.
  • Amount of coverage: Do you want $250,000 of coverage, $500,000 or more? Most experts recommend replacing at least 5 years of income – so if you earn $50,000 a year, a good rule of thumb is to buy at least $250,000 worth of coverage. But this rule of thumb doesn’t account for all of the particularities of your situation and financial goals. Do you have kids with special needs or health problems? Do you want your life insurance to pay off your mortgage in full, pay for future college expenses for your kids, and still provide a monthly income for your surviving spouse? Depending on how much you want your life insurance to do for your family, you might want to go even higher than the “rule of thumb” baseline amount.
  • Optional riders: Some life insurance policies come with “optional riders” that offer special benefits, features and bonuses – at an additional cost. Since they are “optional” you can choose whether or not to include them in your life insurance policy. Optional riders give you a chance to design a specialized life insurance policy that might have certain extra bonus features, additional coverage options, or special terms. The lowest priced life insurance policy might not offer as many optional riders – and sometimes a “bare bones” policy is not the best for your needs.
  • Age and health factors of the policyholder: One of the major factors in the cost of a life insurance policy is the age and health of the person taking out the policy. If you’re a 25-year-old non-smoker in good health, chances are you will be able to get a much more affordable life insurance policy than a 50-year-old smoker with high blood pressure and diabetes. Sometimes a higher life insurance rate is actually a sign of the stability and financial acumen of the life insurance company. The best life insurance companies know how to manage risk, and they know how to charge more to cover certain people and certain situations.
