Medicare Expansion Dropped by Democrats
January 4, 2010Democrats strategically dropped a proposal to expand Medicare this last week in an effort to build support for the current health care overhaul. The proposed Medicare expansion intended to offer individuals ranging from 55-64 years of age the ability to buy into Medicare early. This idea was originally introduced during September health care discussions; however, no action was taken on this plan. The original idea was to offer coverage to people older than 55 years of age if they were laid off, and did not have another means to obtain affordable health insurance coverage.
When the plan to expand Medicare was recently reintroduced it threatened whether or not the entire health care overhaul would have any chance for approval. Many individuals in Washington were opposed the expansion of Medicare because of the plan passed by the Senate Finance Committee; namely, Americans would be given subsidies to buy private insurance.
By abandoning the proposal to expand Medicare, Democrats have helped maintain support for the changes to our current health care system. Although there is a push to get a final vote on the bill before Christmas, there are still numerous issues many believe need to be further addressed.

I am one of the millions of Americans without health care and I find it terrible, shameful and just darn right WRONG. I worked for a well known law firm for over 29 years and they retired me (downsized is a better word) when I was 61 years old. I am 63 years old now and I will be 65 in 2 years obviously. Therefore after I retired my health insurance was cut off. Immediately after retiring I did have health care for about 6 months and I made certain that I saw my physician because I did have stomach problems. Well, after a heart sonogram was done (I should say by in my opinion a very incompetent technician) the machine discovered something that to date I have never had a problem with. My own doctor, who knows I don’t have any health care because every company I apply for uses this one test as a \refusal\ to cover me. Therefore I have to watch everything I do and watch everything I eat, etc. I have much more to say, but I am anxiously waiting for Medicare and I hope I can get that. I would very much appreciate help. THank you.
