Health Insurance Statistics

September 29, 2009

There are many statistics from various sources being quoted as part of the ongoing health care reform debate. It is difficult to interpret these numbers and the validity of the sources. In my research of the health insurance environment, I ran across the website for the National Coalition on Health Care (NCHC). The Coalition has a statement entitled “Facts on the Cost of Health Insurance Coverage” which provides statistics regarding the uninsured in America.

According to the NCHC, the Urban Institute predicts that if there are no changes to health insurance regulation policies, there will be nearly 66 million Americans without health insurance coverage by the year 2019. The NCHC stated that the majority of those who are currently uninsured are those who are employed. The employee portion of premiums for employer-based health plans between 1999 and 2008 increased 117%.

The uninsured must be made aware of their health insurance options. Many believe that health insurance is only available through employers. There are individual health insurance plans which may be more affordable than the plans offered through work. With a little research and advice from a health insurance advisor, it may be possible to find health insurance coverage.
