Student Health Insurance Plans

In making plans for your child to go to college you carefully consider the school, living arrangements, books and other expenses. Student health insurance is usually not on top of the college to do list. In many cases, college students, up to a certain age, are covered by their parents’ coverage. There are instances where college students may not have benefits under a parent’s plan or their parents do not have health insurance coverage at all.

Student clinics are helpful in providing routine care, but cannot handle serious emergency situations. Furthermore, most campus clinics are only open a few hours per day. It is important for a student to have health insurance coverage that will provide benefits to cover services which cannot be taken care of in the clinic.

When completing college forms, there is typically a student health form and information on obtaining student coverage. Just as with any health plan, you will need to review the benefits provided by the plan and any out of pocket expenses for which you will be responsible. You will also need to determine how long the plan will provide coverage and under which circumstances you become ineligible.
