Appealing Health Insurance Claims

August 31, 2009

I read an interesting article the other day concerning the manner in which to appeal claims with an insurance company. The most remarkable piece about it was that reaching out to the company’s chief executive officer can be an effective method to get legitimate and qualified medical expenses covered. The article did however outline that proper steps need to be taken before you decide to take your problem straight to the top, so I thought that I would share those with you.

The first thing that you’re going to want to do before bringing your case to the top is making sure you exhaust all of your standard customer-service approaches and appeals. Furthermore, it is extremely important that you take detailed notes of all of your interactions. This means documenting the times and individuals you spoke to, their contact information, and avenues in which they have advised you to pursue. In doing so, you will save yourself the headache of being sent back to square one. If the standard customer service individuals cannot help you it is best to take it to the next level and request to speak with a supervisor.

You should also be prepared to send documentation reinforcing your claim. This information will include the names of doctors you saw, the date you received their services, and any past interactions you had with the company. This will aid in processing your case in a more efficient and timely manner.
