Health Reform May Omit Public Plan:

August 3, 2009

This last week new information regarding our nation’s health care reform emerged from the Senate Finance Committee. Rumor has it that the legislation expected to surface would likely omit two major components of the Democrats’ proposed health care reform; specifically, there would not be the option of a public plan, and the mandate for employers to offer health insurance employees would be excluded.

Replacing the option of a public plan would be the establishment of a “co-op” group. What are the components of a “co-op” group?

  • A non-profit insurance company
  • Is not run by the government
  • Helps prevents exorbitant prices of for-profit companies
  • May operate under regulations established by the government

The Senate Finance Committee has also proposed the idea that the new health reform should not force employers to offer health insurance. Rather, they may be obligated to contribute a certain amount of money if their employees are insured through an exchange or on Medicaid.

An exchange is a market where consumers are able to choose between various products (insurance plans) of competing insurers. This is exactly how MyInsuranceExpert.com functions.
