August 31, 2009

Changes in High Deductible Health Plans for 2010

August 27, 2009

An option many employer benefit plans are now offering is the High Deductible Health Plan, or HDHP. This health plan is coupled with a Health Savings Account (HSA). The purpose of this plan is to allow for more flexibility of benefits while providing a means of saving for health-related expenses. This health plan option is gaining popularity with employers.

As the name indicates, the HDHP has an annual deductible which is higher than traditional health plans. In 2009, for single coverage, the deductible is a minimum of $1150, while for family coverage, it is $2300. For 2010, the deductible will increase to $1200 for individual and $2400 for family coverage. The annual maximum out-of-pocket expense will also increase to $5950 for single coverage and $11,900 for family. This is an increase of $150 and $300, respectively.

No matter the type of health care insurance coverage you have, it is important that you review your policy provisions. If you don’t have a copy of your policy, you can either review the provisions online or request a new copy. Your policy will explain the terms of coverage, define policy language, outline coverage and exclusions. If there is anything that you do not understand, you can contact the plan administrator’s customer service department and they will help you decipher that which you may not grasp.
